Delimitation and classification of coastal wetlands: Implications for the environmental management of the Colombian Continental Caribbean Boletín de Investigaciones
Millán,Santiago; Rodríguez-Rodríguez,Jenny Alexandra; Sierra-Correa,Paula.
ABSTRACT This article describes the cartographic layer construction process of Colombian Caribbean coastal wetlands at a scale of 1:100,000 and the results obtained in terms of their quantification and typing. Two cartographic layers were constructed and subsequently joined, one of the permanent water bodies and another of temporary water bodies and associated coverages. The layers were generated by multitemporal analysis of 45 Landsat 8-OLI satellite images, based on the NDVI index, uncertainty models by superposition of cartographic attributes, and a flood frequency consultation model on ALOS PALSAR 1 images. As a result, 576,279 ha of coastal wetlands were delimited (1.9 % of total wetlands in Colombia), of which 20.4 % are within protected areas. The...

Effects of physical mixing on the environment of satellite lakes and dams of lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Guya, F.; Wakwabi, E.; Jembe, T.; Osumo, W.; Sitoki, L.; Ogutu, Z..
In the Lake Victoria (Kenya) catchment are found several small lakes and dams. The satellite lakes and dams are important aquifers and buffer zones for the lake. Besides the water bodies are important water sources both for livestock and domestic use. A study conducted in the water bodies between January 2003 and December 2004 showed that effects of eutrophication are wide spread in the lakes and dams. An investigation of primary productivity and effects of physical mixing and material transport was done. In Lake Sare, Lake Victoria waters are transported to the satellite lake during both day and night through Goye causeway that connects the two. The water bodies have higher rates of primary productivity than Lake Victoria. Spatial extent of oxygen...

Belin, Catherine; Lamoureux, Alice; Soudant, Dominique.

Macrophytes of Lake Victoria and succession after invasion of Water Hyacinth OceanDocs
Omondi, R.; Kusewa, Mwende.
The distribution of Lake Victoria (Kenya) macrophytes is described. Succession of macrophytes in the lake became more dramatic and dynamic after invasion of water hyacinth. The weed pushes and smothers other free-floating macrophytes like Pistia stratiotes. It then provides substrates for the emergent Vossia cuspidata, which later reduces its population by competition for light and nutrients. The noxious weed is believed to have led to extinction of Azolla nilotica in the lake.

Measuring the Contribution of Water and Green Space Amenities to Housing Values: An Application and Comparison of Spatially Weighted Hedonic Models AgEcon
Cho, Seong-Hoon; Bowker, James Michael; Park, William M..
This study estimates the influence of proximity to water bodies and park amenities on residential housing values in Knox County, Tennessee, using the hedonic price approach. Values for proximity to water bodies and parks are first estimated globally with a standard ordinary least squares (OLS) model. A locally weighted regression model is then employed to investigate spatial nonstationarity and generate local estimates for individual sources of each amenity. The local model reveals some important local differences in the effects of proximity to water bodies and parks on housing price.
